Gleason Score
The Gleason Score is used to help evaluate the prognosis of men with prostate cancer. The score is determined by the histological appearance of prostate tissue:
Gleason Patterns:
- Pattern 1: Small, uniform glands
- Pattern 2: More space between glands
- Pattern 3: Infiltration of cells from glands at margins
- Pattern 4: Irregular masses of cells with few glands
- Pattern 5: Lack of glands, sheets of cells
Gleason Score Calculation:
- The Gleason score is the sum of the primary and secondary patterns, each graded on a scale of 1 to 5.
- Scores range from 2 to 10.
- Low scores (2-6) suggest less aggressive cancer.
- Intermediate scores (7) suggest moderately aggressive cancer.
- High scores (8-10) suggest highly aggressive cancer.
